A good hairdresser is always busy because people pass on their name to friends and family and they soon build up a thriving business. Sometimes a good hairdresser will have started as a junior trainee from leaving school and gone to college to gain qualifications in the skill. Once they are fully qualified many decide to open their own business and look round for suitable premises. Once the right shop has been found they will then start to look for Hairdressing equipment (Friseureinrichtungen) that is needed. This includes many things such as hairdryers, scissors, brushers, rollers, shampoos, conditioners, towels and bigger items such as a Barber Chair (Friseurstuhl), sinks and reception desk. All these items can be bought from off the Internet and by using a good search engine such as Google, Yahoo or Msn and typing in hairdressing equipment a list will appear as to where these items can be bought.

A hairdresser might find all the necessary items needed by looking in a news magazine that comes out monthly. Hairdressers have to keep up to date with the latest styles so they have to change their equipment on a regular basis. Years ago it was very fashionable to have a curly perm; even the footballer Kevin Keegan had a curly perm. Hairdressers needed a lot of small curlers and plenty of perm solution to get the required effect. Having a perm was a long job and could take as long as three hours to complete. Some people would come out of the hairdressers looking like frizzy Lizzy but thought they looked great. Nowadays it is popular to have very straight hairdos so hairdressers use hair straightness for this look. Hair styles come and go and one year short hair is fashionable, the next year curls and waves, the following years it could be long hair styles or even the shaved head, who knows. Even men are more concerned about their hair than they used to be. Young men use hair gel and colours just the same as women. Hairdressing shops are more likely to be unisex these days instead of men having to go to the Barbers for a short back and sides.

In some hairdressing shops the stylists hire a chair. This means that they pay a rental to the shop owner and have their own clients. A good hairdresser will do a lot of trade and always be busy. A poor hairdresser will soon be struggling for customers as they do not return after a bad haircut. Certain times of the year are always busy for a hairdresser particularly at Christmas when people want to look their best.
